Fall is my favorite time of year. The foliage, the falling leaves, long, cool days and the urge to nap and/or read more than usual. It’s the time of Thanksgiving, the crazy frenzy of the busiest time of the publishing year, time to break out sweaters, mittens and scarves or gloves, rake the leaves… AND DIVE! Yeah, it makes more work, but it’s worth it. Kids are back in school, Halloween has just past, and Christmas/Yule/Hanukkah are on their way.
After Halloween, my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. It has nothing to do with all the food. Okay, it has a lot to do with all the food — the green bean casserole, the dressing, the mashed sweet potato my dad makes every year. While we used to go to a great aunt’s house for a gathering of dozens on holidays, Thanksgiving has become smaller, more intimate in recent years. It’s a nice, restful occasion (at least now that my dad is retired and he doesn’t have to go in to work at ELEVEN FREAKING PM for work on Thanksgiving) where we share a feast, watch the parade and the Purina Dog Show, then lose consciousness or watch football, depending. It’s wonderful.
The year is winding down, the giving season is just a few weeks away… the weather may be cold, but it’s warm in my heart.
Okay, yeah, I gagged a little on that one too. But it’s true! I feel nostalgic and melancholy, ready to settle down for my “long winter’s nap” (which, thanks to the kind of work I do, doesn’t really include a lot of naps.). Which only happens after the happy madness of National Novel Writing Month!
It’s a wonderful season, one where we traditionally consider what we have to be thankful for. What does fall mean to you?
