Top Five Reasons to Love Shifters
Whether they be wolves, bears or dragons, shifters have always been my favorite paranormal beings. They often experience a full range of human emotions that brings them into conflict with their animal instincts.
In writing my wolf shifter series, I uncovered intrinsic elements that I believe are universal most, if not all shifter species.
- Shifters are sexy. Hot-bloodied and primal, they can rev your heart and heat you up with a simple look or growl.
- Fiercely protective, shifters will fight to the death and beyond to safeguard their mates. And it isn’t simply their mates’ lives they stand watch over, they champion their mates hopes and dreams, pushing them to never give up or give in.
- Shifters are loyal, almost to a fault. Once you have their heart, they will move heaven and earth and likely a little of bit of hell to give you everything you need.
- Shifters like to play, but not emotional games. They’re too straight forward for that sort of manipulation. They want to have fun and enjoy life to its fullest.
- Shifters crave family, or pack connections. Although there may be some exceptions, in general, community is very important in a shifter’s life and they’ll do whatever it takes help their mates adapt and thrive within the collective.
So there you have it. My top five reasons to love shifters.
The hero in my debut release, AWAKENED BY THE WOLF, embodies them all. Here’s a snippet of when he’s beginning to realize he’s met his true mate.
“You think I’m glorious?” Brice unfastened her silver hair clip. Red ringlets splashed over his hands and slid through his fingers. He held fast to one curl and stroked the luxurious strands across his cheek. A thrill zipped straight down to his groin.
“That’s not what I meant.” A slight tremble parted her lips.
Brice ached for a kiss and so much more. Her taste on his tongue, her scent on his skin, her luscious legs wrapped around his hips. A deluge of erotic dreams had eroded his resolution to keep things platonic.
Cassie’s scent wove a spell of need and want that smothered reason. Helpless to resist, he slipped his arm around her waist and lowered his face to hers. She squinted and puckered her mouth, but not to receive his lips.
The unexpected rejection jolted Brice. “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t want this.” She gestured a between-you-and-me hand signal. “I have plans for the future and you’re not in them.”
Damn. That stung.
“You need ground rules.” Cassie wormed out of his hold and faced him with a straight back, squared shoulders, and both hands on her hips.
Her eyes slanted with censure. She pointed her jaw and scrunched her mouth like his fourth grade teacher when he’d neglected to do his homework three days in a row. As a wolfling, the no-nonsense, better get your shit together look had mortified him into compliance. As an adult male in his prime, that look on a feisty, petite human female did something entirely different.
“I don’t like rules.” He smiled.
So now you know my top reasons to love shifters. Help me expand the list. Tell me what you love about shifters and why. A randomly chosen commenter will receive a copy of AWAKENED BY THE WOLF.

About the Author
Southern born and bred, Kristal Hollis grew up amid cane fields and orange groves. Books fed her imagination, providing adventurous portals to ancient civilizations, medieval fiefdoms, alternate realities and futuristic worlds. Then, a friend gave her Johanna Lindsey’s FIRES OF WINTER, a historical romance which ignited a life-long love affair with romantic fiction.
After earning a degree in psychology, Kristal has enjoyed career and volunteer endeavors that have included sales, banking, social services, and animal rescue. When a family medical situation required her to take a work sabbatical, she began penning deliciously dark paranormal romances as an escape from the real-life drama. Even though the crisis passed, her passion for writing continues.
Currently, Kristal lives with her husband and two rescued dogs at the edge of the enchanted forest that inspires her stories.
READ ON TO SEE MY REVIEW!
This is a good, old-fashioned paranormal romance of the highest order! The hero is broody, sexy, and protective. The heroine is strong, stubborn, and in serious denial. There is great pack politics, intrigue, and some very suspenseful moments that you just can’t be sure are going to turn out okay.
Did I mention the sexy? Brice seriously made me melt — being incredibly hot and vulnerable, having such a tragic past. When he sniffs the heroine: OMG. The slow burn of their romantic relationship drove me just the right amount of crazy before we got there. The way they come to need one another is really sweet.
The conflicts are many and rough. Brice & his family’s past, problems in the present, his serious personal issues. Cassie with her own past, her unwillingness to let go of her fears and insecurities. Antagonists that are a true threat in a very believable sense for a paranormal.
I’ve always been a vampire girl, and always will be. But more and more in recent months, I’m coming to truly appreciate shapeshifters — especially werewolves (or wolfan, in this case. Excellent mythology building.) The reasons that Kristal shared above are the ones that truly resonate with me. I’ve been working on my own werewolf/MC series, and it’s a lot of fun. Reading terrific examples of the genre positively help improve my writing, and I was SO entertained to boot.
Many PNR/UF books have become so complicated in order to make themselves stand out, that they require more studying than just leisure reading.AWAKENED BY THE WOLF strikes just the right balance between engaging world-building and simple characters and storytelling to make this a fun read.
Don’t miss this great entry to the genre! I give it a bouncy…
4.5 happy batty moons!
