Freelancing. Hashtag UGH.

Published June 23, 2016 by The Author

I can’t believe I typed that. Saying “hashtag” anything has become one of my pet peeves lately, and now it’s dropping out of my own fingertips all of a sudden!

Anyhoo, it’s been a long time since I talked about my freelance  indentured servitude  career. As most of you know, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to support yourself with the income from fiction writing. Unless you are one of those lucky souls that gets a ginormous contract and becomes the beloved of a ton of fans that auto-buy every book, you have to spend money and time not only writing, but promoting, as well as have some kind of outside work to generate that money. You must be in fiction writing it because you love it, because if you’re in it for the money, the glory, or massive fame, you’re in for a shocking surprise. Unfortunately, if you’re a single person with no other means of support, that’s not going to work.

Buckle up, there’s a rant coming!

I have my Kindle, so please feel free to contact me by email, tweet, or FB if you like. I’d love to hear from you.

Hopefully I’ll be back shortly. Love and batty kisses to everyone!

Happy Almost Thanksgiving! And if you’re not too busy on Wednesday…

Coffee and Porn in the Morning!

I’ll be talking about sexy Paranormal Men on November 21, with a giveaway on November 23!

Stop by COFFEE AND PORN IN THE MORNING (I just adore saying that. Hee.) on November 21 and chat about what exactly it is we love so much about men who are other-than-human in our fiction. Fangs, fur, wings, horns, magick wands (heh) or whatever, we paranormal fans just gobble them up. I also talk a little bit about Adam Straton, the super-macho Dom vampire from IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS, and why he’s so sexy even though he’s so scary. And as a special treat, if you stop by and comment on Friday, November 23 (when you get home from shopping, maybe?) and be entered for a giveaway  of the BDSM Vampire Menage smutty goodness. Get yourself a little something for the holiday — I’d love to see you!

~

I’m kind of stuck in Thanksgiving mode, since for the first time in years, my fam will be packing up and heading up to Maine to visit with family I haven’t seen in years. I’m nervous and excited to see everyone, and anxious about being outside my comfy chair and office here at home. Eeee.

This also requires getting ready to go and finishing up any online/writing stuff that needs to be done through the end of the week, because I don’t know what my internet access or time constraints will be like. Do you realize I don’t think I’ve taken a real day off in I don’t know how long? I’ve always at least checked my emails, and often blogged, done something every day. This is the first time I may actually be cut off from communication — and I’m NERVOUS about it! I think that officially makes me an addict! Of course, I could be getting panicky over nothing, since I’ll have my Kindle and there’s probably WiFi everywhere.

Anyway, so there has been madness in my universe for the past few days. Besides getting ready to leave town, there’s been all the activity on IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS, and the frantic race to finish an m/m contemporary story for an anthology call from Dreamspinner Press. I read the call, got the idea, and fell absolutely in love with it — 12,000 words in three days, plus editing and submission package to get it in on time. I think it’s some of the best romance I’ve written in a long time. Of course, it was helpful to have George Clooney and Brad Pitt going at it in my head through the whole thing. *G* So I should hear in the next couple of days about that. I really like Dreamspinner’s style so far. I’ve got a wish list over there that would knock over a small horse. Cross your fingers that I get in!

Today I’ll be doing laundry all day, then running out to get my hair cut and run some errands — resisting the urge to spend money I don’t have to buy a new outfit or two. This is why I don’t have credit cards anymore. Tomorrow will be packing and getting ready, and then first thing Wednesday, we’re off into the highway madness. Oy. We should be back Friday night.

Oh, I forgot! I’ve taken on a few book review duties. I thought it would be a good way to help keep up with new things coming out on the market, and get to know some writers and readers better. Because, you know, I don’t have enough to do.

Next week will be dedicated to cramming in as much freelance work as possible so I’ll have some money for holiday shopping. It’s going to be a lean year this year, but… we’ll be together and having fun, and I’ve had the best year writing-wise than I’ve had in a long time! And while the tight belt pinches, a full spirit is nothing to spit at, believe me.

Well, I’m off. If I don’t get a chance to post tomorrow: HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Boycott Freaky Friday, let the big stores know that their workers deserve ONE DAY a freaking year with their families!

Happy Veterans Day! And LAST CHANCE to enter the AUTUMN’S HARVEST BLOG HOP!

Published November 12, 2012 by The Author

Happy Veterans Day!

Thank you to all who have served, and their families, who keep the home fires burning. I wish with all my heart that we could find some other way to solve our problems as human beings than war, but the world we live in makes that difficult. You are owed a debt we can never adequately repay, and I send energy into the universe every day with hope that you will be able to return home safely.

~

This is the last few hours to enter the AUTUMN HARVEST BLOG HOP and win those beautiful leaf earrings from lacylauragray! Don’t miss it! I’ll be announcing the winner tomorrow, November 13!

Fall Beauty

I just love all these beautiful fall things. I live in New York apple country, but we have a farm and stand right up the road where we can get all these delicious harvest treats. We’re also Cardinal land! My alma mater the State University of New York at Plattsburgh’s mascot is that beautiful bird. We love seeing them in the depths of winter, when (if) the world is buried in pristine white snow, and that spectacular splash of red goes streaking by.

The Adirondacks are truly a great place to live.

~

So this week is going to be PACKED. Of course, if you saw my To Do list last Thursday, you know things don’t slow down much ever for me. But my NOT SO SOOPER SEEKRIT KINKY ALTER EGO, A. Sangrey Black, has her GRAND DEBUT on Wednesday, November 15th! I have a ton of promo work to do with that.

IF YOU’RE A BOOK BLOGGER FRIEND OF MINE, I WOULD LOVE REVIEWS, INTERVIEWS, TO DO CHARACTER INTERVIEWS, SKETCHES, OR WHAT HAVE YOU as A. Sangrey Black. Please be aware that IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS is dark, hardcore BDSM vampire menage FUN. It’s not for everyone who reads my regular work!

IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS by A. Sangrey Black

I’ll be out of town the week of Thanksgiving and probably won’t have internet access — can you believe that? But it’s time to visit with family I haven’t seen for years, so I think it’s really important. I’m scrambling to get all of my obligations done before I leave, just in case. I’ll do my best to check my email from somebody’s phone or something, but I can’t guarantee I’ll be easily available.

I’m kind of afraid my brain is going to melt. Or freeze. Or maybe I’ll die of withdrawal. OMG I’m an addict.

~

NaNoWriMo Update: NOT going well! Haven’t been able to get words in every day, and I’m not entirely sure I’m going to be able to catch up, considering everything that’s going on. I’m going to keep going for it — I need to get ADIRONDACK SHIFT and THE VALKYRIE & THE VAMPIRE off my plate so I can move on to my next projects, already in the planning stages. I also have to get DIE FOR YOU, Sangrey’s next submission (m/m PNR) finished and into the publisher tonight or tomorrow. Cutting it close, I don’t know if they’ll accept it. Then TRUE HOLLYWEIRD NIGHT needs to be polished up and submitted next.

Oy! Maybe I do need a week completely off, just reading in my limited quiet time.

~

I’m off to work! Make sure to stop by Shadowed Hearts, A. Sangrey Black’s blog, all week (and month) for IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS FUN!

Very tired writer woman. *yawn* Hey, are you an author who wants a little free publicity?

Published November 5, 2012 by The Author

First,  I’m looking for three authors to fill in empty spaces for THE NEXT BIG THING Blog Tag/Hop thingy. Basically, I’ll be posting on November 7th about Monster hits on the bestseller lists (that kind of rhymes), then I’ll chat a bit about my WIP, THE VALKYRIE & THE VAMPIRE, and then I “tag out” on five authors (I’m cheating on one — it’s going to be A. Sangrey Black. But hey! I/she has a new release coming out the next week!) Most of the other author’s I’ve been speaking to are swamped with writing, promos, or touring, and begged off.

I swear, the most time it’s taken for me on this Tag is finding writer friends with free time! What happens is, after I finish my rambling, I’ll present the contact information (Blog, books sales link, Twitter, Facebook, whatever you want), and my readers will stop by to check YOU out, and see what YOU see about these topics. Then you tag as many authors as you can get your fingers on and pass on the love. Your post, if you choose to join in, would go up November 14th, so you have plenty of time to type something up.

If you’re interested, comment on this post with your email address, or drop me a line at hafowler at gmail dot com.

I am WIPED out, kids. I did two big freelance projects in two days, worked on promo for IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS, worked on my WIP’s (but didn’t report my NaNo words or anything!), did edits on another A. Sangrey Black short story, did some outlining, tried to get some reading done and… etc. Sleep has been elusive due to racing mind and constant ideas waking me up in the middle of the night, for which I have to wake up and write them down before they vanish into my dreams.

Of course, sometimes I wake up in the morning and find a sticky note beside my bed that looks like it was written by a drunk three year old that says something like, “Alien rock salt leather. Sunshine! Eyes like Dean and that guy with the purple nose.”

… What am I supposed to do with this? I mean, I get the Dean and the rock salt, because I’ve been immersed in a Supernatural re-watch for a while. But aliens? Sunshine? Purple noses?

I don’t know, man. I think I may be over-medicated.

ANYWAY. A few other pieces of business:

1. I opened an account on AUTHORGRAPH, which is pretty cool. If you own any of my ebooks or want to buy them, you can get them personalized and signed!

Positive Encounter by H.A. Fowler2. POSITIVE ENCOUNTER (All Romance Ebooks | Smashwords) is now $0.99! Now and forever! If you’ve been shying away from a short-short story for a too-big price, now it’s the next best thing to free. Which sounds kind of pathetic, I know, but… I’m one of those weird sappy writers who is more dedicated to having people read their work than making money… okay, not that I DON’T want to make money, but let’s face it — how many of us in the industry are making a living writing novels in the vast forest of Ebookland? You really need to be in it for love, and the slim hope you’ll be JK Rowling someday.  I’m also still sort of in that fanfic mindset: I’d like some positive feedback or ratings even more than the pennies I get for each copy. BUT I’LL TAKE THE PENNIES TOO, so feel free to buy and share your thoughts. 😀

Okay, I’m off to try and get some NaNo words in today. You know, I think I should get credit for the 1300 words of copy I had to write for my freelance assignment, dammit. But, no, I’ll just do fiction at least, even if it’s not the novel I was supposed to be working on.

Hope everyone is well! If I get a chance after voting, errands, and more writing, I’ll post again. Stay tuned for THE NEXT BIG THING on November 7th, and please do get in touch if you’d like a free link and a chance to talk about your WIP!

“Dona Nobis Pacem” – Latin for Grant Us Peace.

Annual November 4 Blog Blast for Peace

Violence is bad for children and other living things…

I wish I had more time today to write a long post like I did last year, but as you know I’m swamped with various this and that in work and life.

But at this moment more than ever, I think it’s important to think about peace: war all over the world, the East Coast drowning in destruction from Superstorm Sandy, and the truly disturbing vitriol from all factions during the Presidential Election…

Madness everywhere, and rather than better, it seems to always get worse. The only way we can make a change is for each one of us, individually, to give an effort to be kinder to one another, to think before we speak or type. To remember, as the Dalai Lama says, that we are all the same: we want happiness and to avoid suffering.

“I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their happiness or satisfaction. Yet true happiness comes from a sense of peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultivation of altruism, of love and compassion, and elimination of ignorance, selfishness, and greed.”
Dalai Lama

Our job is to make sure that we achieve these things without hurting others, or taking away their rights to the same thing.

“It is no longer good enough to cry peace, we must act peace, live peace, and live in peace.” Shenandoah proverb
Take a moment today to think about peace. Meditate, pray, or just take a quiet moment to consider what we could do to make the world a more peaceful place. Small acts that when combined, become a quiet revolution.

STORRRRM! Other business… AND SINGING!

Published October 29, 2012 by The Author

In case you don’t have time for singing today, I’ll take care of other things first… THEN SING! Yay! It’s still Halloween, even if we all have to dress up as Aquaman or Ariel and swim for candy, dammit!

BUT alas, I know in a lot of places including here in the Adirondacks, even if we don’t get the brunt of the storm, we may bet a lot of wind. That means losing power and the Internet — which makes me want to just curl up in bed with a paperback (Currently the wonderful “Released” by Amber Polo. Don’t miss it) and my Itty Bitty Book Light (yup, still have one) and tune out until I can get back online. Actually, I have a few projects I luckily started hand-writing, so I can keep working on those as well! For right now, I’m going to take care of a few important things for the next few days and hope for the best.

1. There’s still time to enter the HOWLOWEEN BLOG HOP. It ends tonight, and I’m planning to announce the winner tomorrow. Make sure you get your entry in to win those cool vampire earrings!

2. There’s still time to enter the WICKED AFTER DARK Blog Hop as well — and a $10 Gift Certificate from All Romance Ebooks, where you can get all the naughty ebooks you like, including MINE! 😉

I have a TON of stuff coming up! Wednesday, if I’m able to post, I’ll share a steamy/scary scene from ALL HALLOWS EVA, my erotic ghost story. Unfortunately, with everything going on, the entire story won’t be finished in time for my favorite holiday. 😦 But I thought I’d finish it anyway and try to find it a home so a broader audience can see it.

Upcoming Events:

November 1: NANO BEGINS! 30 Days of absolute writing mania. My plan is to finish THE VALKYRIE AND THE VAMPIRE, but I have other projects I’ll be working on as well, including the long-languishing ADIRONDACK SHIFT and a m/m paranormal I’m working on for my SOOPER SEKRIT KINKY ALTER EGO (due for submission on the 15th.) See? MADNESS!

November 7:THE NEXT BIG THING Blog Tag/Hop — it’s a little different from the usual hop I’m desperately addicted to. This is more a way to talk about my work in progress and introduce some other authors I admire. You read about what’s coming up from me, and then hopefully check them out to see what THEY have to say.

November 9: The AUTUMN’S HARVEST BLOG HOP — this one is about the change in the weather (RELEVANT!), the foliage, warmer clothes, the end of the year, all the things we associate with autumn. There’ll be giveaways and excerpts that touch the heart of fall.

November 15: My SOOPER SEKRIT KINKY ALTER EGO (A. Sangrey Black, for those who have been dying to know. *G*) releases her first published work, a steamy, dark BDSM/Menage/Vampire fun fun fun short novella, IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS. There will be a blitz of appearances here, there, and everywhere, so if you’re interested in following with the progress of that, drop by her blog, Shadowed Hearts, at http://asangreyblack.blogspot.com.

More to come as it develops. If you’d like to get regular updates on my calendar, your best bet is to join the Yahoo! Mailing List (see the bitey vampire button at right), or follow the H.A. Fowler page on Facebook – http://www.facebook.com/h.a.f0wler.

Okay, I’m off. Hopefully not for long — everyone out there really fighting the brunt of the storm, my thoughts are with you and your families. STAY SAFE!

And now… THE SINGING!

On the 29th Day of Halloween, my truly creepy love gave to me:
