Batty Book Review: QUEEN OF SHADOWS by Sarah J. Maas!

Published December 15, 2016 by The Author

Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4)Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 batty moons FIVE BATTY MOONS!

This is my favorite book in the series so far! The world expands exponentially, so we see much more of the places we’ve only heard about before this. The cast also explodes, but in the most wonderful way! Villains coming out of the woodwork, surprising heroes, characters we can’t be sure about their true alliance… so MUCH starts to unfold in this book, and we’ve only just begun! This starts the action roaring ahead that we’ve been waiting for since the beginning!

What’s even more important for me is that the characters really become more multi-dimensional, more real, and I have started to have a real investment in their fate for the first time. And I’m sure I’m not at all alone when I say I love Aelin and Rowan. They crack me up, make me sigh, make me cry. He’s a brute, but not a heartless, violent brute with no heart — he shows it more and more here. Aelin is no delicate flower, damsel in distress. Quite the opposite. Sometimes she can be a little hard and heartless herself, but ultimately she and Rowan melt each other, balance each other, make one another better. That’s the kind of ship I like to see.

I’m already into #5, and I can’t wait to get to reading time every day to see what happens next!

Batty Book Review: CROWN OF MIDNIGHT (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J. Maas!

Published November 29, 2016 by The Author

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2)Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 batty moons BATTY MOONS!

This book was MUCH heavier, scarier, and more heart-wrenching than the first book in the series. The politics are more twisted, the manipulations and machinations more wild, the magic even more incredible and terrifying. The events in this book will change Celaena–and those who care about her–forever. It’s powerful stuff!

There is a bit more softness, and even a bit of humor, in this book. As Celaena evolves, Ms. Maas really has the writing talent to help us see it, however subtle. There are mysteries and plots, and some terrific, unexpected twists in CROWN OF MIDNIGHT. I couldn’t wait to get into bed at night to race through this one! Even though I sobbed like a baby through a lot of it. This is some hardcore epic fantasy, folks, and it feels like the ride has barely started!

Batty Book Review: THRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J. Maas

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

>>> 4 batty moons FOUR BATTY MOONS!

This universe just grabbed me and won’t let go. One of the things that really makes this series unique is Celaena Sardothien, the sort-of heroine. I say “sort-of,” because she is really more of a protagonist than a straight-up heroine. She has serious–and understandable–flaws. Generally, we don’t see killers, especially paid assassins, as heroes. There are extenuating circumstances to her place in life. You really should read THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE, which includes all the short prequel stories for the series, imo. Technically you don’t have to, but I think they provide some really important background that explains how Calaena got to be who and what she is, as well as what is truly at the core of her, beyond the labels she carries.

This book is a terrific mixture of magic, fantasy elements, suspense, action, and romance. It sets up what will become a truly labyrinthine and epic story on a strong foundation. In fact, it’s hard for me to review this book alone, because I immediately went on to the next one! It all feels like one giant story, in which I can’t quite remember which events happened in which book. I’d say that’s a good sign, at least for me.

My only complaint is that the series isn’t finished yet, and it’s going to drive me nuts when I get to the end of the current final book!

Ooh! Before I forget, I LOVE the elves in this universe. But I can’t remember if we actually meet any in this book or not! Don’t worry, there is PLENTY to keep you occupied in THRONE OF GLASS. Ms. Maas really deserves her accolades and popularity. Her writing is really strong, and she creates a reality where there are no shining, perfect heroes, but real characters with real flaws–even though they are unmistakably creatures of a fantasy world! I’m really enjoying this roller coaster ride!

PUBLISHER’S DESCRIPTION:

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Dogs of Babel, a taut, emotionally wrenching story of how a seemingly “normal” family could become desperate enough to leave everything behind and move to a “family camp” in New Hampshire–a life-changing experience that alters them forever.

How far will a mother go to save her family? The Hammond family is living in DC, where everything seems to be going just fine, until it becomes clear that the oldest daughter, Tilly, is developing abnormally–a mix of off-the-charts genius and social incompetence. Once Tilly–whose condition is deemed undiagnosable–is kicked out of the last school in the area, her mother Alexandra is out of ideas.

The family turns to Camp Harmony and the wisdom of child behavior guru Scott Bean for a solution. But what they discover in the woods of New Hampshire will push them to the very limit. Told from the alternating perspectives of both Alexandra and her younger daughter Iris (the book’s Nick Carraway), this is a unputdownable story about the strength of love, the bonds of family, and how you survive the unthinkable.

PUBLISHER’S DESCRIPTION:

Sin is a vampire at the end of his rope. Having escaped forcible conversion by a vampire cult, he temporarily kills himself and rises again only to immediately imprint on a human: eighteen-year-old Dominic.

Thanks to the cult’s conditioning, Sin can’t bite Dominic, but because of the imprint he also can’t leave him alone. Protecting Dominic from a local vampire named Oriana puts Sin between a rock and a hard place.

With nowhere else to turn he does his best to convince Dominic to like him—but finds himself becoming just as attached to Dominic, which definitely isn’t making his life any easier.

Note: Gun to My Head is 101,000 words in length and contains some explicit content, heavily features themes of dubious consent (in sexual and non-sexual contexts) and violence, and includes a scene depicting a (temporary) suicide.
